Summary:
The Certified Medical Assistant's (CMA) duties and responsibilities consist of providing administrative assistant skills and clinical duties. This position is an essential member of the health team and works closely with the health providers to provide comprehensive health assessments (assessment of vitals and common symptoms/concerns seen in a student health center) within the guidelines of departmental and university rules, State of Maryland codes, and established protocols. Emphasis on the prevention of illness, promotion of health, and development of health maintenance.

Education/Experience:
HS diploma or equivalent and successful completion of a Certified Medical Office Assistant program plus two years or more experience as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Current CPR certification. Prior experience with electronic medical records preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Ability:
- Ability to collect patients personal information and update electronic health records
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology
- Knowledge of blood-borne pathogen requirements and techniques
- Ability to interact and cooperate with patients, staff and others
- Appreciation for the philosophy and functioning of an integrated Wellness Center that includes both health and counseling services.
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to work independently and to maintain confidentiality
- Familiarity with college and departmental policies and procedures
- Knowledge of standard medical practices
Physical Requirements:
Light work: exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Sedentary work. Keyboarding, talking, hearing, repetitive motions. Close visual acuity. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Requires physical abilities consistent with a busy office environment on a university campus. Daily work with computers, monitors, copy machines and other office equipment. Should be able to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends. Able to walk/run quickly to all areas on campus in response to an emergency. Intermittent sitting, standing, stooping, walking, and occasional lifting of light and heavy objects. Work is performed in the Wellness Center, with exposure to diseases. Requires normal range of hearing, vision, touch, and sense of smell. Climate controlled setting, shared office space.
Essential Functions:
- Provide Intakes (check in patients, take and record vital signs, obtain chief complaint and note changes in medical history prior to provider seeing the patient)
- Triage patients in person or over the phone and schedule for appointments as appropriate or consult with healthcare provider as needed
- Perform the defined laboratory functions: handling of specimens, CLIA-waived laboratory testing, Quality Controls, documentation of test results, specimen tracking with outside laboratory, scanning of faxed results into electronic health records, stocking of laboratory supplies. Manage medical waste for disposal
- Maintain infection control protocols by ensuring that equipment and exam areas are cleaned and disinfected
- Administration of medications/vaccines as directed by the provider
- Discuss medications and their side effects with patients under provider supervision
- Support health providers and assist with procedures
- Prepare patients for exams
- Maintain optimal patient flow
- Set up and turn over exam rooms in between patients
- Assist in removal of biohazard waste
- Monitor vital signs as required or needed
- Maintain and update electronic medical record (EMR)
- Conduct health screenings as appropriate
- Complete delegated duties as assigned by the AD Health and Health staff during a pandemic or other health outbreak.
- Assist with inventory of supplies and medications
- Verify expiration dates of all medications monthly as well as emergency supplies
- Manage monthly quality controls for all point of care testing
- Assist in monitoring health requirements and immunization compliance for all full-time students in collaboration with the AD of Health.
- Collaborate with the health team to support the Peer Education program and other health promotional outreach on campus.
- Cover front desk duties as needed which includes, but is not limited to: answering phone calls, scheduling patients, checking patients in.
